The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) today warned the public to beware of entities operating under the names of “LonShiX” (Note 1) and “Bitbank (Global) Financial Holding Group” (Note 2) that are suspected of engaging in fraudulent activities purporting to be related to virtual assets.
LonShiX
The SFC noted that LonShiX claimed on its website that its address was in Hong Kong, which was a false address. LonShiX lured investors to open investment accounts by falsely claiming to be bank-approved investment professionals on social media platforms and instant messaging apps.
Bitbank (Global) Financial Holding Group
The CSRC noted that the name used by Bitbank (Global) Financial Holding Group is very similar to the name of a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange, but in fact the two are not related.
The SFC also suspected that Bitbank (Global) Financial Holding Group may have disseminated false and misleading information about itself and its business through online channels (including its website and social media), claiming that it had obtained an SFC license and had started to apply for a virtual asset service provider license (Note 3).
All of the above claims are untrue but may create a false and misleading impression that the services and business of Bitbank (Global) Financial Holding Group are properly licensed and legal, thereby inducing others to trade on its platform.
The Hong Kong Police Force has taken action to block the websites of LonShiX and Bitbank (Global) Financial Holding Group, as well as the related X accounts (Note 4), at the request of the SFC.
LonShiX, Bitbank (Global) Financial Holding Group and their websites were included in the CSRC’s warning list of suspicious virtual asset trading platforms on December 2023, 12.
The SFC would like to remind the public once again to beware of investment opportunities and opinions that are “too good to be true” shared on social media platforms and instant messaging apps. Investors should remain vigilant and beware of fraud when making investment decisions.
