Canadian regulator accuses Liquitrade of operating illegal crypto exchange Latoken

The British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC) said its investigation into the Liquidade crypto asset trading platform found that the company operated an illegal exchange. The investigation also determined that users were trading contract rights rather than the crypto assets that the platform claimed.

The BCSC said that Liquidatrade's Latoken platform was operating without registration and was essentially operating illegally in the province. The investigation team found that platform users "did not actually buy or sell actual assets" but traded contractual rights to obtain future withdrawal rights, which were derived from the underlying crypto assets. The BCSC said that although Liquidatrade was not authorized by the BCSC, it still promoted transactions in various ways, including creating a derivatives trading market and promoting derivatives traded on Latoken.
